Understanding And Helping The Suicidal Individual
Be Aware Of The Warning Signs
If you or someone you know exhibits any of the following signs, seek help as soon as possible by contacting a mental health professional, calling Crisis Call Center at (775) 784-8090 or 1 (800) 273-8255, or by calling the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1 (800) 273-8255.
– Threatening to hurt or kill oneself or talking about wanting to hurt or kill oneself.
– Looking for ways to kill oneself by seeking access to firearms, pills, or other means.
– Talking or writing about death, dying, or suicide when these actions are out of the ordinary for the person.
– Feeling hopeless.
– Feeling rage or uncontrolled anger or seeking revenge.
– Acting reckless or engaging in risky activities, seemingly without thinking.
– Feeling trapped, like there’s no way out.
– Increasing alcohol or drug use.
– Withdrawing from friends, family, and society.
– Feeling anxious, agitated, or unable to sleep or sleeping all the time.
– Experiencing dramatic mood changes.
– Seeing no reason for living or having no sense of purpose in life.
How do you remember the warning signs of suicide? Here’s a mnemonic device that can help you remember the basic signs:

Suicide Is 100% Preventable If You Know The Signs And Take Action.
– Be aware. Learn the warning signs.
– Get involved. Become available. Show interest and support.
– Ask if he/she is thinking about suicide.
– Be direct. Talk openly and freely about suicide.
– Be willing to listen. Allow for expression of feelings. Accept the feelings.
– Be non-judgmental. Don’t debate whether suicide is right or wrong, or feelings are good or bad. Don’t lecture on the value of life.
– Don’t dare him/her to do it.
– Don’t give advice by making decisions for someone else, or by telling them to behave differently.
– Don’t ask “why”? This encourages defensiveness.
– Offer empathy, not sympathy.
– Don’t act shocked. This creates distance.
– Don’t be sworn to secrecy. Seek support.
– Offer hope that alternatives are available, do not offer glib reassurance; it only proves you don’t understand.
– Take action! Remove means! Get help from individuals or agencies specializing in crisis intervention and suicide prevention.
Be Aware of Feelings, Thoughts, and Behaviors
Nearly everyone, at some time in his or her life, thinks about suicide. Almost everyone decides to live because they come to realize that the crisis is temporary, but death is not. On the other hand, people in the midst of a crisis often perceive their dilemma as inescapable and feel an utter loss of control. Frequently, they:
– Can’t stop the pain.
– Can’t think clearly.
– Can’t make decisions.
– Can’t see any way out.
– Can’t sleep, eat or work.
– Can’t get out of the depression.
– Can’t make the sadness go away.
– Can’t see the possibility of change.
– Can’t see themselves as worthwhile.
– Can’t get someone’s attention.
– Can’t seem to get control.
If you are concerned about a family member or friend, show you care and ask the question: Do you feel suicidal? Trust your gut instincts, and if you’re concerned, help get the person to support services that can help. If the person can’t open up to you, find someone else who can talk with that person. The site provides low income & extremely low income veterans assistance through the Department of Veterans Affairs, Supportive Services for Veterans and Families (SSVF) grant which focuses on homelessness prevention and rapid re-housing.
NNVRC offers veterans and their family members case management and assistance in getting other public benefits as well as temporary financial assistance on behalf of veterans for rent payments, utility payments, security deposits and moving costs.

PBH’s therapeutic services are individualized and adjusted to the level of functioning of the client. Services will:
Emphasize quality of care and optimal client-centered outcomes,

A primary focus for PBH is to provide clinical and behavioral health services in Rural Nevada areas. Services are provided in the environment determined most effective for the client. Service evaluation is done every 30 days, with a full outcome evaluation done every 90 days. All services are provided under direct Clinical Supervision.

Veterans Assistance Overview
Military veterans, especially ones who served in the U.S. Navy, were unnecessarily exposed to asbestos during their service, placing them at risk for developing pleural mesothelioma. Learn more about how veterans were exposed and benefits that can help today.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers some hope. It has a number of benefits for veterans who were exposed to asbestos during their service. The Veterans Department at The Pleural Mesothelioma Center is dedicated to ensuring that veterans receive all the VA benefits they deserve.
Our veterans department provides military veterans with resources they need to secure benefits from the VA. In addition to answering questions about asbestos-related cancer and these benefits, that is the department’s chief mission. Our staff is headed by retired Navy officers who have a working knowledge about how the VA renders its benefits decisions and how they best can help veterans get benefits. The VA is renowned for long, drawn-out processes. Our veterans department helps cut through that red tape.
The best news is that this service, and others that we provide to veterans and their families, is free. Among the benefits we fight for on behalf of veterans include Disability Compensation, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) and VA Health Care.
Eligibility for VA Benefits
A person who served in the active military service and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable is considered a veteran who may be eligible for VA health benefits and services.
Once the nature of a veteran’s discharge from military service is established, other eligibility requirements include:
- Length of military service
- Classified as a service-connected disability
- Income level
- Number of dependents
- Available VA resources
- Proof of a diagnosis caused by asbestos exposure
The key to filing a successful VA claim is convincing the VA that the majority, if not all, of a veteran’s asbestos exposure was a direct result of his or her service in the military. The veteran must provide documentation from an accredited physician stating that the diagnosis is asbestos-related and that the disease was caused by military service.
In some situations, Sage Health Services can provide therapy service via telehealth. This occurs when an individual receives therapy from their home via a videoconference format. Telehealth can be utilized when a client has an Internet-enabled device (smartphone, tablet, computer).
Autism Support –
Sage Health Services provides intensive, one-to-one , in-home support to families and individuals who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Some of the areas that can be addressed through Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) include:

Medication Management –
Sage Health Services recognizes the potential benefit of psychotropic medication support in conjunction with therapy and other outpatient services. If desired, these supports are available through a network of well-qualified clinicians.

PSR – Psychosocial Rehabilitation: This in-home and community-based service provides resources for those wanting assistance with a variety of mental health issues. This service provides additional coping skills for people currently in therapy and/or taking psychotropic medication. Sage provides the following areas of support:

Learn to Recognize the Signs
Many Veterans may not show any signs of intent to harm themselves before doing so, but some actions can be a sign that a Veteran needs help. Veterans in crisis may show behaviors that indicate a risk of harming themselves.
Veterans who are considering suicide often show signs of depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and/or hopelessness, such as:
- Appearing sad or depressed most of the time
- Clinical depression: deep sadness, loss of interest, trouble sleeping and eating—that doesn’t go away or continues to get worse
- Feeling anxious, agitated, or unable to sleep
- Neglecting personal welfare, deteriorating physical appearance
- Withdrawing from friends, family, and society, or sleeping all the time
- Losing interest in hobbies, work, school, or other things one used to care about
- Frequent and dramatic mood changes
- Expressing feelings of excessive guilt or shame
- Feelings of failure or decreased performance
- Feeling that life is not worth living, having no sense of purpose in life
- Talk about feeling trapped—like there is no way out of a situation
- Having feelings of desperation, and saying that there’s no solution to their problems
Their behavior may be dramatically different from their normal behavior, or they may appear to be actively contemplating or preparing for a suicidal act through behaviors such as:
- Performing poorly at work or school
- Acting recklessly or engaging in risky activities—seemingly without thinking
- Showing violent behavior such as punching holes in walls, getting into fights or self-destructive violence; feeling rage or uncontrolled anger or seeking revenge
- Looking as though one has a “death wish,” tempting fate by taking risks that could lead to death, such as driving fast or running red lights
- Giving away prized possessions
- Putting affairs in order, tying up loose ends, and/or making out a will
- Seeking access to firearms, pills, or other means of harming oneself
